Why I Love Sauvignon Blanc

IMG-0486.jpg

For those of you not familiar with Sauvignon Blanc, it is by far my favorite white wine. I highly recommend it.

While this green grape originates from the Loire Valley in France, my favorite Sauvignon Blanc is from the magnificent growing region of Marlborough on the northeastern side of the South Island of New Zealand.

It’s a versatile wine that pairs well with chicken, turkey, veggies, sour cheeses as well as Thai and Vietnamese cuisine.

The main areas that grow this grape are: France, New Zealand, Chile, South Africa, Moldova, U.S. (primarily California and Washington State) and Australia (Margaret River and Adelaide Hills) with other areas being, Romania, Spain, Argentina, Hungary, Russia, and Austria.

My best experiences with Sauvignon Blanc are those in Marlborough, NZ and Chile. I’ve enjoyed one or two California varieties as well but when in doubt, I turn to Marlborough! And, since it’s served best at “cellar temp” which is about 50-60 degrees Fahrenheit, you can pop a bottle in the freezer for 30 min and it’s ready to be served. I prefer mine a little cooler, but you can try it out and see what works for you.

It’s also not a great aging wine which means you can jump right in and open that bottle. No need to save it for a special occasion (remember – life is a special occasion!)

I’ve shared a few of the Sauvignon Blancs I’ve tried (and still have the bottles for!) in the picture below. I highly recommend McBride Sisters and Kono. Another favorite (not pictured) is The Crossings. Most of these wines run from $12.99 to $18.99 (on the higher side) which makes them fairly affordable.

If you want to learn more about Sauvignon Blanc, I recommend checking out the sources I reference below as well as the book Wine Folly The Essential Guide to Wine by Madeline Puckette and Justin Hammack and Wine for Normal People - A Guide for Real People Who Love Wine, But Not the Snobbery That Goes With It by Elizabeth Schneider.

If you have any favorite Sauvignon Blanc recommendations, please share in the comments. I love getting suggestions to try!
